A devastating landslide caused by a thunder and lightning storm hit the main road through northwest Pakistan's Khyber Pass. This natural disaster buried more than 20 trucks, killing at least two people, with dozens more feared trapped in the rubble. The area is a major transit point for trade between South Asian nations and Central Asia.
Abdul Nasir Khan, the deputy commissioner of the Khyber district, informed Reuters that "Twenty to twenty-five containers are buried in the wreckage, and the wreckage is quite extensive." The rescue operation is currently underway with heavy machinery. The casualties could rise, as three other people have been taken to the hospital for medical assistance.
The landslide occurred during the early hours of Tuesday, and the authorities are trying to recover the bodies of two Afghan citizens who lost their lives in this tragic event. The photos shared by officials show how the truck containers are buried in huge piles of rocks, indicating the extent of the damage caused by the landslide.
This devastating incident highlights the need to prioritize safety measures in natural disaster-prone areas, especially in high-traffic transit points. The use of technology and advanced warning systems can help mitigate the impact of such incidents and save lives. It is essential to invest in safety measures to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
