The decision to hold the G20 meeting in Srinagar has been deemed a significant diplomatic setback for India, according to Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry. The president highlighted that several important countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, and Mexico, have refused to participate in the conference held in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
President Chaudhry emphasized that hosting the G20 conference in the disputed region is a violation of the UN resolutions on Kashmir. The refusal of key stakeholders to attend the event further underscores the disputed nature of the long-standing conflict. Simultaneously, the widespread protests organized by Kashmiris on the same day have helped internationalize the Kashmir issue.
The protests took place in more than 15 cities worldwide, including New York, London, Brussels, and various European countries. Since August 5, 2019, India has implemented significant changes in the IIOJK with the aim of consolidating its control over the territory. President Chaudhry emphasized that India cannot deceive the world when it comes to the Kashmir issue.
It is widely known that India has deployed an extensive military and paramilitary presence, with over 900,000 troops stationed in the region. In such a highly militarized zone, promoting tourism becomes a questionable endeavor.
The AJK President criticized the Indian government for its repressive policies against minorities, particularly Muslims. He warned that the rising wave of xenophobia and intolerance within Indian society could ultimately lead to the disintegration of India, likening Prime Minister Modi to Gorbachev of the former Soviet Union.
The decision to hold the G20 meeting in Srinagar has not only dealt a blow to India's diplomatic standing but has also shed light on the ongoing Kashmir dispute. The refusal of significant countries to participate and the international protests organized by Kashmiris serve as reminders that the issue remains unresolved and requires attention from the international community.
